Who is Carl Roewer?

Irish born bassoonist, Carl Roewer, is currently studying his bachelor degree with Prof. Henrik Rabien at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Having begun his studies at the MTU Cork School of Music, Carl enjoys a varied and international performing career throughout Ireland, Germany and the UK.

As a soloist, Carl made his solo concerto debut in front of the President of Ireland, performing with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland in 2022. His playing was described by Waterford News as ‘graceful and wistful’, and since then, he has also appeared as concerto soloist with the 1885 Orchestra in London in June 2023. In July of the same year, he performed Vivaldi’s Concerto in F accompanied by members of the Irish Baroque Orchestra. Carl appeared as the 2024 ‘Rising Star’ young artist at the Killaloe Music Festival in Ireland, and has been invited to perform as the Young Artist 2025 at the Malvern Concert Club in the UK.

A keen orchestral player, Carl has held the principal bassoon position in the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland (2021-2023), Ulster Youth Orchestra (2022-Present), MTU Symphony Orchestra (2021-2023) and Orchestre Camerata de’Bardi van Nederland (2022). As well as this, he is regularly invited to perform with the Kammerphilharmonie Freiburg, Kammerorchester der Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, the MTU Project Orchestra, the 1885 Orchestra London, the Trinity Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

As part of his studies in Freiburg, Carl studies the Contrabassoon with Angela Bergmann of the SWR Sinfonie Orchester and Hans Agreda of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich. He also studies period performance on the Baroque Bassoon with Prof. Pol Celentelles. Carl is a keen pianist, and studied for many years with Mary Beattie at the MTU Cork School of Music. Aside from his performing career, he is the host and producer of the Killaloe Music Festival Podcast, available on most large scale podcast streaming platforms.
